Barnsley Metrodome Waterpark (Calypso Cove)

Sightseeing attraction | Barnsley | England | United Kingdom

The Barnsley Metrodome Waterpark, better known as Calypso Cove, is one of the most popular leisure facilities in Barnsley, England, and a highlight for families and water sports enthusiasts in South Yorkshire. This indoor water park, part of the larger Metrodome Leisure Complex, offers a tropical atmosphere and a variety of attractions that provide entertainment year-round regardless of the weather. With its pirate theme and a mix of exciting slides, relaxing pools, and interactive play areas, Calypso Cove has earned a reputation as the "hidden gem of Barnsley." It is a place that promises fun, adventure, and relaxation for visitors of all ages and stands out for its accessible location near the city center.

The water park was designed as part of the Metrodome Leisure Complex, which opened in 1989 and was originally planned as a multifunctional sports and leisure facility. Calypso Cove itself has evolved over the years into a standalone attraction that has been regularly updated to meet the demands of visitors. The facility is particularly known for its family-friendly design and offers a wide range of water experiences, catering to adrenaline junkies as well as young children. The tropical theme with pirate ships, palm trees, and a touch of adventure gives the park a unique atmosphere that immediately transports visitors to another world.

Key attractions at Calypso Cove include the numerous water slides that offer different levels of difficulty and speeds. The "Terror Torrent" is considered one of the fastest indoor slides in the UK, enticing the brave with a thrilling ride through dark tunnels. The "Eruption" and the "Kraken" are other highlights that provide twists and surprises for thrill-seekers. For more relaxed water fun, there is the wave pool "Tsunami," which generates waves regularly and simulates a beach atmosphere, as well as a lazy river that gently drifts visitors through the park. For younger children, "Barnacle Bay" is an interactive splash area with small slides, water fountains, and a giant tipping bucket that provides surprising water showers. A pirate ship with the opportunity to "walk the plank" adds a playful element to the area.

In addition to the water attractions, Calypso Cove also offers diving boards at heights of 1 and 3 meters, which attract older children and teenagers, as well as a separate 25-meter competition pool for those who prefer swimming laps. The park places a strong emphasis on safety, with lifeguards always present to supervise activities. The facility is designed to be accessible to people with limited mobility, with barrier-free changing rooms and toilets, although some areas like the slides naturally require physical demands.

The park's infrastructure includes family-friendly changing rooms that are spacious and functional, although occasionally perceived as somewhat outdated. A café called "The Hideout" is located directly by the pool and offers a selection of food, from classic British dishes like Fish & Chips to light snacks and drinks. The café is positioned so that parents can keep an eye on their children while taking a break. For those looking for more variety after swimming, the Metrodome complex also features a bowling alley and fitness facilities that are easily accessible, making Calypso Cove a versatile destination for a day out.

Calypso Cove is also a popular venue for special occasions such as children's birthdays, with special party packages offered that include access to specific areas and catering. Seasonal events, such as summer specials with additional water activities, help to refresh the experience regularly and attract repeat visitors. The proximity to public transportation and the availability of free parking make the park particularly accessible, further increasing its popularity.

Visitors appreciate the variety of attractions and the friendly atmosphere, although on particularly busy days like school holidays or weekends, the crowd can lead to longer wait times. Some note that the water is occasionally cooler than expected, prompting sensitive visitors to bring warm clothing. Nevertheless, Calypso Cove remains a place praised for its family-friendly focus and high fun factor. It is a vibrant example of how a modern leisure facility blends Barnsley's industrial past with a tropical flair, creating an unforgettable experience for people of all ages. Whether for a short visit or a full day out, the Barnsley Metrodome Waterpark offers a perfect mix of adventure and relaxation in a unique setting.

Been here almost 2 years with my son . Standing on stairs near child pools. Was told to move due to an emergency life guard route . Issues I seen are no clear signs or different floor colour to state this and at the top gate was a poor small print sign that looks like a for sale sign. To make things worse the top gate was nearly blocked with public and chairs . They needs to be improvements for life guard emergency routes .

Great place, can't give it 5 stars as it's let down by really limited parking and no cash machine.

A brilliant visit to Calypso Cove. Not too over crowded. Just right amount of people. Don't get me wrong it was busy but not uncomfortably busy. Changing rooms could of done with the floor cleaning but you get that at most swimming facilities. We do love it here and will continue to visit.

What a stupid website! No onsite booking and a £1.50 booking fee. In a world of obesity, exercise should be encouraged. However, greedy pigs will always be so.

I recently visited the Barnsley Metrodome, and it was a fantastic experience from start to finish. Whether you're looking for a fun day out with family, a place to exercise, or just somewhere to relax, this venue has something for everyone. The highlight for me was the Calypso Cove Waterpark. The slides were thrilling, especially the Terror Torrent, which was a real adrenaline rush! The wave pool and lazy river provided a great balance of excitement and relaxation. The facilities were clean, well-maintained, and lifeguards were always on hand, making it a safe and enjoyable experience. Beyond the waterpark, the Metrodome has plenty more to offer. The gym is spacious and well-equipped, perfect for a good workout, and the bowling alley was a great way to wind down afterward. The arcade added some extra fun, especially for kids. We also grabbed a bite to eat at the on-site restaurant, and the food was reasonably priced and tasty. The staff throughout the venue were friendly and helpful, making the whole visit smooth and enjoyable. Overall, the Barnsley Metrodome is a brilliant place for a fun day out, whether you're visiting with family or friends. I’ll definitely be returning soon!

Barnsley Metrodome… Well… it’s an experience. Car parking? Like a game of extreme hide and seek, except the only prize is mild road rage. Waiting times? Surprisingly great – I had enough time to contemplate my life choices but not enough to spiral into existential dread. The desk staff were very helpful and friendly. Then, the changing rooms. Ah, the eau de urinal was so potent I briefly considered starting a petition for nose plugs. But hey, at least you get to shower before entering the pool – a nice rinse to wash off the trauma. The pool itself? A decent size, if you enjoy a swimming experience that feels like rush hour on the M1. All in all, not a bad trip out – just don’t forget your parking skills, nose plugs, and zen-like patience.

Took two 12yo boys here for a 90 min session. Worried it wouldn't be varied enough or that they would be too old. But it was absolutely amazing. They were able to go in themselves. Loved the slides and diving boards and wanted to stay longer. Well organised. Great staff. Lots of food options. Will go again
